How to Draw Tarzan

Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Tarzan from Walt Disney's Tarzan. A new drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!

Intro: When learning how to draw Tarzan, first start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

Step 1: Start by drawing a circle near the top, right side of the page. This will be the basic shape for the top of Tarzan's head. It doesn't have to be perfect. It's just a guide.

Step 2: Under the circle, draw a shape for Tarzan's jaw and chin. Angle the line on the left side to indicate where the jaw will be. Then angle the line twice at the bottom for the chin. These two shapes are the guide for Tarzan's entire head.

Step 3: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the entire head shape, one vertical and one horizontal. Bend the lines so that they contour to the shape. These will be construction lines that will help you place Tarzan's facial features later on.

Step 4: Draw two small shapes similar to half-circles or ovals sitting on top of the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical construction line. These will be guides for Tarzan's eyes. The oval on the right should be a bit smaller because of perspective.

Step 5: On the left side of Tarzan's head, draw an arc similar to the letter C as a guide for his ear.

Step 7: That's it for the initial sketch! You have the basic shape of Walt Disney's Tarzan. Now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.

Step 8: Above each eye, draw a long shape for the eyebrows. The shape of Tarzan's eyebrows should graze the top part of the eyes. The eyebrows come to a point at the sides. Between the eyebrows, draw a couple of curved line to indicate Tarzan's furrowed brow.

Step 9: Draw Tarzan's nose using the lines as guides for placement. The line for Tarzan's nose begins on the left side of the eye on the right, then comes down below the first circle and curves back up. Draw a couple of curved lines to the left of the nose and below the first circle for the nostril.

Step 10: Darken the edges of the eyes and make the top part thicker for the eyelashes. Inside each of Tarzan's eyes, draw a small circle for the irises. Inside each iris draw a big dot for the pupils. On the top right side of each iris, draw a tiny circle to represent the glare in Tarzan's eyes.

Step 1:1 Under Tarzan's nose, draw two lines to make up his mouth. The top line is for the actual mouth. The bottom line should be smaller and creates Tarzan's lower lip.

Step 12: Tarzan's hair can be a little tricky, so it's divided into three steps. Tarzan's hair is divided into chunks like dreadlocks. The first chunk starts at the top of the head, then curves down the side of the face, over the ear, and then bends over the shoulder. Make the lines for Tarzan's hair wavy to indicate texture. This step can be challenging, so take your time, sketch it out lightly at first to get the structure right, and then darken the lines.

Step 13: Use the C-shaped arc on the left as a guide to draw Tarzan's ear. Darken the edge of the ear except for the top part where the hair overlaps it. Draw a few lines within Tarzan's ear for structure. Draw the sideburns as a curved line to the right of the ear.

Step 14: The back portion of Tarzan's hair consists of a few curved lines. Bend the lines so that they conform to the shape of Tarzan's head. The line should end on the left shoulder.

Step 15: Now draw the chunk of hair on the right side of Tarzan's face as another long, wavy shape. Follow the side of the face as you draw the chunk of hair. Use Tarzan's face as a guide. The hair chunk bends at the bottom and rests over the shoulder.

Step 16: Use the initial head shape as a guide to draw the rest of Tarzan's face. Follow the path of the shape as you darken the lines. The forehead starts inside the head a bit. The line then extends out near Tarzan's eyebrow to create his thick brow.

Step 17: Use the lines under the head as guide to draw Tarzan's neck and shoulders. Darken the lines and draw a few more curved lines within Tarzan's neck for his muscles and collar bone.

Step 18: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Walt Disney's Tarzan. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.

Step 19: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Tarzan! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Tarzan drawing.

Final Step: For a completely finished Tarzan drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color Tarzan's hair and eyebrows brown. His eyes are green. His skin is peach, but if you don't have peach, improvise and use yellow-orange or light brown. Experiment! That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of the Tarzan from Walt Disney's Tarzan movie.
