How to Draw Richard Watterson

Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

 

Draw Anger Inside Out 1

Step 1: Start by drawing a big circle near the top of the page as a guide for Richard Watterson's head. The circle doesn't have to be perfect. It's just a guide. Leave some room at the bottom for the rest of the body.

Step 2: Under the circle, draw a rectangle-like shape as a guide for Richard Watterson's body. The sides of the rectangle should be as wide as the width of the circle. The bottom of the rectangle should be below the circle only by a little bit.

Step 3: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the top part of the head, one vertical and one horizontal. The vertical construction line should end at the rectangle. Bend the lines so that they contour to the shape of the circle. These will be construction lines that will help you place Richard Watterson's facial features later on.

Step 7: Under the body, draw two short lines as guides for Richard Watterson's legs. At the end of each line, draw an oval as guides for the feet.

Step 8: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic shape of Richard Watterson from The Amazing World of Gumball. Now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.

Step 9: Darken the small circles inside Richard Watterson's head to create the eyes. Add two small lines to each eye to represent the short eyelashes. Insides each eye, draw a dot for the pupils.

Step 11: Below Richard Watterson's eyes, where the two construction lines intersect, draw a small oval for the nose. Under the nose, draw a small line for the upper part of the mouth.

Step 12: Under the nose, draw a big shape for the open mouth. The shape of the mouth is similar to an oval that bends up a bit. The bottom part of Richard Watterson's mouth should touch the top part of the initial rectangle guide.

Step 13: Inside Richard Watterson's mouth on the top part, draw a curved line for the tooth. On the bottom left side of the mouth, draw another curved line for the tongue. Outside of the mouth on the bottom, draw a long curved line for the bottom lip.

Step 14: Use the initial shapes and lines as guides to draw the shape of Richard Watterson's head. Follow the basic path of the initial circle but make an indentation on the upper right side to create the cheek.

Step 15: Use lines on top of the head as guides to draw Richard Watterson's ears. Draw the ears as arcs on top of the head and use the lines to establish the height of the arcs.

Step 16: Draw the hand on the left side of the body using the initial J-shaped line as a guide. Follow the path of the guide as you darken the line and make the shape of the arm thicker. Add a few lines to represent the shirt's cuff. Draw Richard Watterson's hand using a curved line and add a couple of lines within the shape of the hand for the fingers.

Step 17: Use rectangle-like shape as a guide to draw Richard Watterson's body. Darken the lines of the rectangle but make the shape curve out more on the left side for his bottom.

Step 18: Inside the shape of Richard Watterson's body, draw the tie and detail of the pants using a series of curved lines.

Step 19: Draw Richard Watterson's arm and hand on the right side by using the initial line and circle as guides. Follow the path of the line as you make the arm thicker and add a curved line near the middle for the sleeve. Use the circle as a guide to draw the hand and fingers.

Step 20: Use the lines under the body as guides to draw Richard Watterson's legs. Make the shape of the legs thicker and add a line inside each leg for the pant cuffs.

Step 21: Draw Richard Watterson's feet using the initial ovals as guides. Darken the shape of the ovals and add a couple of lines inside each foot for the toes.
