To draw The Road Runner, follow step-by-step drawings below. The new lines in each step are shown in red, and each step is explained in the text below the photo, so you'll know exactly what to draw in each step.
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Draw a big circle near the top of the paper as a guide for the Road Runner's head. First make four marks to determine the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. With every step, sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a small, circular object like a coin or a lid.
Step 2: Inside the head, near the bottom, draw a curved horizontal line as a guide to help you place the Road Runner's facial features later on. On top of the horizontal line and close to the left edge of the circle, draw a smaller, curved, vertical line for another construction guide.
Step 3: Below the head, draw a long, curved vertical line as a guide for the Road Runner's neck. Pay attention to how long this line is in relation to the head. Don't make the line too short.
Step 4: On the bottom end of the line for the neck, draw a small circle as a guide for the front part of the Road Runner's body. This circle should be smaller than the circle for the head.
Step 5: To the right of the small circle, draw a sideways arc as a guide for the Road Runner's back portion of the body. Tilt the arc a bit so that it slopes downward slightly.
Step 6: Below the guides for the body, draw a long, vertical line as a guide for the Road Runner's legs. Bend the line a bit at the top. At the bottom draw two lines that angle outward as guides for the feet. The Road Runner is tall so make the vertical line long.
Step 7: On top of the body, draw a curved vertical line that angles to the right at the top as a guide for the Road Runner's tail. This line should surpass the head before curving to the right.
That's it for the guides! For the next steps, use darker lines for a more defined drawing.
Step 8: Starting inside the head, where the construction guides meet, draw a line that curves to the left for the top part of the Road Runner's beak. This line should angle upward once outside of the circle for the head. Below that, draw a longer curved line for the bottom edge of the top beak. The right tip of the bottom edge should end above the horizontal construction guide inside the head.
Step 9: Sitting on top of the horizontal construction guide, draw two long ovals for the Road Runner's eyes. The eyes should be on either side of the vertical construction guide.
Step 10: Inside each eye, draw a small oval for the Road Runner's pupils. Keep the ovals close to the right edges of the eyes. Above each eye, draw a curved line for the thick brow.
Step 11: To the right of the Road Runner's eyes, draw a long arc for the side of the Road Runner's beak that creates a cheek-like structure. To the left of the eyes, draw a smaller arc for the beak's other "cheek". Inside each "cheek", draw a small line for the smile lines. To the left of the tip of the beak, draw a curved line that represents the other side of the curved beak.
Step 12: Above the first circle, draw a series of curved lines for the feathers on the Road Runner's head. The feathers are made up of thin, long arc with a sideways orientation. The feather on the right should stand up straighter. Add a small line that connects the feathers to the beak to complete the head. Draw the feathers big; almost the same size as the head.
Step 13: Darken the line under the head for the first part of the Road Runner's neck. To the left, draw another line that's almost parallel to make the neck thicker. Don't make the neck too thick.
Step 14: Use the line under the body as a guide to draw the Road Runner's first leg. Darken the guide and make the shape of the leg thicker using another long line at the top. Make the top part thick for the base of the leg. At the bottom, draw two thin, long shapes for the toes. The tips of the toes should be thicker and round. At the tip of each toe, draw a tiny, triangular shape for the nails. Inside the leg, draw a few short lines for creases on the bare skin.
Step 15: Draw the other leg the same way, only the toes should point left this time. Make the top part of the leg thick. The middle part should be thin. The toes should also be thin except for the tips that should be thick and round. At the nails at the end of each toe and lines for creases inside the leg.
Step 16: On the left side of the Road Runner's body, draw a small, egg-like shape for the small, folded wing. On the right side, draw three small arcs for the feathers on the wing. Darken the outer edges of the initial guides to create the body. Don't overlap the leg that's on this side of the body. On the left side of the body, near the neck, draw a small arc for the other wing peeking from behind the body.
Step 17: Darken the line on top of the body for the Road Runner's tail. To the left of the line, draw a series of thick, long arcs for the feathers on the tail. The arc at the top should be the biggest and thickest. The bottom feathers should be made up of arcs of different sizes overlapping each other. Make the feathers near the bottom smaller than the ones at the top.
Step 18: Go over the final sketch lines with a pen, marker or any other type of permanent ink. Take your time and be careful when you ink to avoid any accidents. After the ink dries, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser for a cleaner Looney Tune drawing.
Final Step: Color your drawing using colored pencils, markers or crayons! Use Purple for the head and wings. Use blue for the main part of the body. Color the beak yellow-orange and the legs light brown. That's it! You know how a finished drawing of the Road Runner from the Looney Tunes.
