How to Draw Toadette

Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Toadette from the Mario video game series. A new cartoon drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!

Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

Step 1: Start with a circle near the middle of the page. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a guide for Toadette's head. Leave enough room at the top for her hat and at the bottom for the rest of her body.

Step 2: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the head, one vertical and one horizontal. The lines should be tilted a bit to a more diagonal position. These will be construction lines that will help you place Toadette's facial features later on.

Step 3: Under the horizontal construction line, draw a small shape similar to the letter D as a guide for Toadette's smile.

Step 4: On top of Toadette's head, draw big line in the shape of a circle as a guide for the hat. The line should start at the tip of the horizontal construction line and should curve over the head and end at the other tip of the horizontal construction line. The shape should be almost twice the size of the original circle.

Step 5: Under the head, draw a few straight lines as a guide for the top part of Toadette's body. The shape should be similar to a triangle with the top corner missing.

Step 6: On the left side of the body, draw small angled line as guide for Toadette's arm. At the lower end of the arm, draw a small circle as a guide for the hand.

Step 7: On the right side of the body, draw a straight line in a diagonal orientation as a guide for Toadette's waving arm. At the top end of the line, draw a small circle as a guide for the hand. Add five very short lines on the top part of the circle as a guide for the fingers.

Step 8: Under the shape of the triangle-like shape, draw a curved line as a guide for the lower part of Toadette's body.

Step 9: Under the lower part of the body, draw a two circle-like shapes as guides for Toadette's feet. These shapes should be pretty big.

Step 10: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic Toadette shape. Now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.

Step 11: Draw a long oval for Toadette's eye. Draw it sitting on top of the horizontal construction line and to the left of the vertical construction line. Shade it in except for a tiny circle to represent glare. On the right side of the vertical construction line, draw a small, thick curved line for the winking eye. You could draw an oval here instead if you don't want Toadette to be winking.

Step 12: Use the D shape as a guide to draw Toadette's mouth. Follow the basic path of the shape but make the line curvier as you darken it. Inside the shape, draw another curved line for the tongue.

Step 13: Use the original circle as a guide to draw Toadette's head. Follow the basic path of the circle as you darken the line, but make the top part flatter. Add a curved line at the bottom for the neck.

Step 14: Darken the shape on top of the head to create Toadette's hat. Inside the shape, add a big circle in the middle. Draw a couple of lines on the sides for the other circles that aren't completely visible.

Step 15: Use line on the left as a guide to draw Toadette's arm. Follow the path of the guide as you make the arm thicker. Draw the hand at the end by using the initial circle as a guide. Use a few curved lines to show the hand and fingers curving backward.

Step 16: Draw Toadette's vest as a few angled lines on the top part of the body. The shapes on the right side should be thinner because of the perspective.

Step 17: Use the line on the right as a guide to draw Toadette's waving hand. Follow the path of the line as you make the arm thicker. Draw the hand and fingers by using the circle and lines as guides.

Step 18: Draw a few circles on either side of the head for the hat's decorations. The circles should get bigger in size as they get closer to the bottom. They should be behind the body, so don't always draw the complete circles.

Step 19: Use the bottom lines as guides to draw the bottom half of the body. Darken the straight and curved lines to make up her dress. Then darken the curved circles to create her shoes.

Step 20: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Toadette. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look, or continue to the step below to go for a more finished look.

Step 21: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then erase all of the pencil marks. You now have a finished inked drawing of Toadette! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Toadette drawing in its entirety.

Final Step: For a completely finished Toadette drawing, you have to color it. You can use anything you want: markers, color pencils or even crayons! The main part of Toadette's hat and dress is pink. Leave the circles white and add a few white circles on the big bottom dangling spheres. Leave a white line on the bottom part of the dress too. Her skin is peach, but if you don't have peach, improvise and use yellow-orange or light brown. Toadette's tongue is red along with the main part of the vest. The edge of the vest is yellow. The inside of the mouth and her shoes are brown. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Toadette from the Mario video game series.
