Materials You’ll Need
Before starting, gather these basic drawing supplies:
- Pencil (an HB lead pencil is best for light sketches)
- Eraser
- Black ink pen or marker
- Drawing paper
- Colored pencils or markers
Intro: Start drawing Cookie Monster with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don't press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Start with Simple Lines and Shapes

Step 1: To draw Cookie Monster, start with a wide, slightly tilted oval on the top of the page, and make sure to leave room so you can construct his body later on. This shape will be the basic guide for his head, and drawing it tilted will provide that iconic crazy look he's known for.

Step 2: Next, draw a vertical line that intersects the oval in half and a horizontal line located closer to the top. These will be construction guidelines that will help you place the facial features later on.

Step 3: Draw two circles on top of the oval for his eyes. They should be positioned on either side of the vertical construction guideline. Below the horizontal line, add a wide U-shaped curve to form the mouth.
Keep Building the Drawing Slowly

Step 4: Now sketch basic guidelines for the body and hands. To build his torso, drop two lines down from the bottom of his head, making the left line shorter than the right. Outline the hands on either side as large, upside-down U shapes.

Step 5: Using those big arcs as guides, sketch a series of smaller curves to define his digits. Draw three fingers and a thumb on each of his hands.
Finish Up the "Skeleton"

Step 6: When working on this character, you have to also sketch his favorite snacks! Form a couple of cookies by drawing two crescent shapes right at the top of his hands.

Step 7: That's it for the initial setup of this Sesame Street character! You now have the underlying framework ready, so next you will tighten the forms. From this stage forward, press harder with your pencil to establish darker, more definitive sketch lines.
Now Add Details

Step 8: Darken the outer shapes of the eyes. Inside them, place two smaller circles for pupils. He features classic googly eyes, so sketch these pupils off-center to give him that signature wild look.

Step 9: Now tighten the mouth. Since he is a shaggy muppet, use a sequence of small curves when defining his upper lip while following the original guide shape. Contrast this by drawing his lower lip as a clean, smooth U shape without the shaggy texture.

Step 10: Use the primary head outline as a tracking guide to construct his hairy face, employing a series of connected jagged arcs and rounded spikes to mimic fur.

Step 11: Complete his limbs using that same textured approach, giving his fingers cleanerdefinition by rounding them out slightly.
Stay Patient and Keep Drawing - You're Almost There!

Step 12: Finalize the treats he is holding by sketching jagged indentations along the shapes to indicate bite marks. Scatter a few small, organic shapes inside them to represent chocolate chips.

Step 13: Wrap up the main body contour by once again using jagged, wavy strokes to make him appear appropriately covered in fur.

Step 14: That's it! You now have a solid line layout of this Sesame Street favorite. You can stop at this stage for a loose, hand-drawn look or move forward to the next step for a clean illustration.
Now It's Time to Color

Step 15: For a polished, inked finish, carefully trace over your final pencil guidelines with a pen or fine marker. Give the ink a moment to dry completely, then clear away the underlying graphite marks with an eraser. You now have a finished ink piece! You can stop here or jump into the final phase to bring it to life.

Final Step: To finish your project entirely, add color. Use whatever media you like best, whether it is markers, colored pencils, or crayons. This character is wonderfully simple to shade: just fill in his face, hands, and body with vibrant blue, and color the depth of his open mouth solid black. That's all it takes to complete your custom drawing!
