How to Draw Finding Nemo

Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Nemo from Pixar and Disney's Finding Nemo. A new cartoon drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!

Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

Step 1: Start with a circle near the right side of the page. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a guide for Nemo's head.

Step 2: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the head, one vertical and one horizontal. These will be construction lines that will help you place Nemo's facial features later on.

Step 3: Draw two small circle-like shapes as guides for Nemo's eyes. Draw them sitting on top of the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical construction line. The shape on the right should be thinner because of the perspective.

Step 4: Draw a big arc using a long, curved line on the left side of the head as a guide for Nemo's body. The arc should bulge up at the top a bit and be flatter at the bottom.

Step 5: To the left of the body, draw the guide for the tail using a series of curved lines. Nemo's tail is big, so spread out the lines to make the tail wider.

Step 6: To the right of the head, draw another arc as a guide for Nemo's fin. Draw a smaller u-shaped arc under the body on the left side as a guide for his smaller “lucky” fin.

Step 7: Now draw three more arcs around the body as guides for the rest of Nemo's fins. The arc at the top is for his dorsal fin, so this arc should be the biggest. The other two arcs should be smaller and closer to the tail.

Step 8: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic head shape for Nemo, the clownfish from Disney's Finding Nemo and Finding Dory. Now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.

Step 9: Darken the basic circle-like shapes inside the head to create Nemo's eyes. Draw a couple of curved lines over each eye for extra detail on the brow.

Step 10: Inside each eye, draw a circle for Nemo's irises. Inside each iris, off to the side, draw a tiny circle to represent glare. Inside each eye, in the middle, draw a big circle and shade it in for the pupils.

Step 11: Under the eyes, below the horizontal construction line, draw Nemo's open mouth using two curved lines. Add a smaller line on the left side of the mouth for the smile line.

Step 12: Inside Nemo's mouth, draw a long line at the top for the row of teeth and a small line at the bottom for the tongue. Add another small, curved line under the mouth for the bottom lip.

Step 13: Use the initial circle as a guide to draw Nemo's face. Follow the basic path of the circle as you darken the line to create his face. The line should come in toward the eye on the right side to create his brow.

Step 14: Now use the arcs on top of the body as guides to draw Nemo's dorsal fin. Use one continuous line to connect both arcs and create the single dorsal fin that dips down near the left side.

Step 15: Use the arcs near the front of the body as guides to create Nemo's pectoral fins. Darken the line for the fin on the right. Add a small indentation on his “lucky” fin on the left as you darken its line.

Step 16: Draw Nemo's last fin under the body on the on the left side using the remaining arc as a guide. Add two more arcs under the body on the right side for the final pair of fins.

Step 17: Use the series of lines on the left side as guides to draw Nemo's tail. Follow the basic path of the guides as you darken the lines but make the shape a bit wavier.

Step 18: Finish drawing the rest of Nemo's body by following the initial guide lines.

Step 19: Draw a few long, wavy lines inside the body to give Nemo his distinctive clownfish pattern. Draw a pair of curved lines near the head. Use the initial circle as a guide to place the lines. Add another pair of lines across the middle section of the body and a final pair of shorter lines near the Nemo's tail.

Step 20: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Nemo, the clownfish from Disney's Finding Nemo and Finding Dory. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look, or continue to the next step for a more finished look.

Step 21: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then erase all of the pencil marks. You now have a finished inked drawing of Nemo! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Nemo drawing in its entirety.

Final Step: For a completely finished Nemo drawing, you have to color it. You can use anything you want: markers, color pencils or even crayons! The main part of his body is orange, along with his eyes. Use black on the edges of every one of his fins. Make the bands inside the body thicker using black too. Leave the middle part of the bands blank. The inside of his mouth is brown, and his tongue is dark red. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Nemo from Disney's Finding Nemo.
