How to Draw Rarity

Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Rarity from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. A new cartoon drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!

Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don't press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

Draw Rarity Pony 1

Step 1: Start with a circle on the top right side of the paper. It doesn't need to be perfect. It's just a basic shape for Rarity's head. Leave enough room at the bottom for the body.

Draw Rarity Pony 2

Step 2: Inside the circle, draw two intersecting lines, one horizontal and one vertical. The vertical line should be close to the right side of the circle, and the horizontal line should be close to the bottom. Bend the lines so they contour to the shape of the sphere. These are construction lines that will help you place Rarity's facial features later on.

Step 3: Draw two ovals as guides for Rarity's eyes. Draw them sitting on top of the horizontal construction line, on either side of the vertical construction line. The oval on the right side should be smaller because of the perspective.

Step 4: On top of the head, draw two triangle-like shapes. The shape on the left should be a bit bigger, and its sides should bulge out. This will be a guide for Rarity's ear. The shape on the right should be thinner and shouldn't bulge out as much. This will be a guide for her horn.

Step 5: Below her head, draw a bigger oval lying on its side. This will be a guide for Rarity's torso. Pay attention to the size of this oval in relation to the first circle. Don't draw the oval too far down, otherwise Rarity's neck will be too long.

Step 6: Draw two curved lines that connect Rarity's head and torso to form her neck.

Step 7: Under the torso, draw two lines as guides for Rarity's feet. The line on the right should be angled near the middle to represent the bent leg. The other leg should be a tiny bit longer and curved. Add a long curved line on the left side of the body as a guide for Rarity's tail.

Step 8: That's it for the initial sketch! You have the basic shape of Rarity from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. Now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.

Step 9: On the lower right side of the circle and under the right eye, draw a small arc for Rarity's muzzle. Use the construction lines and the original circle as guides to help you with the placement. The lower part of the head follows the basic path of the original circle. On the top part of the nose, draw a tiny curved line for the nostril. Under the nostril, draw a longer curved line for the smile.

Step 10: Use the initial oval shapes as guides to draw Rarity's eyes. Darken the bottom edges of the ovals using thicker lines. Draw a line near the middle of each oval to represent the half-closed eyes. Add a few small curved lines on the top part and sides of the eyes for the eyelashes.

Step 11: Darken the top part of the ovals using a thinner line for Rarity's eyelids. Inside each eye, draw a curved line for the irises. Within the each iris, add another curved line for the pupil and shade it in except for two small circles that represent glare.

Step 12: Use the triangle-like shape on the top right side of the head as a guide to draw Rarity's horn. Darken the sides of the shape and add three curved lines inside for extra detail.

Step 13: Use the original circle and the triangle-like shape on the top left side as guides to draw the rest of Rarity's head. Follow the basic path of the guides as you darken the lines. Add a small curved line within the shape of the ear.

Step 14: Rarity's mane is a bit tricky, so it's divided into three parts. First draw three curved lines at the top of the head. The first line starts at the horn and curves right. The second line starts on the head and meets the first line on the right. The third line starts at the ear and meets the second line on the right. Now draw a line that starts on the bottom of the ear, then curves down and splits into two and ends on the top part of the torso.

Step 15: Now draw the front part of the mane on the right of the head and directly under the first curved line of the previous step. This part of Rarity's mane basically consists of two curved lines with a small spiral to the right of them.

Step 16: The final part of Rarity's mane is a series of curved lines within the torso. Under the lines that ended at the torso, draw a shape similar to a curved square. On the top left side of the square, draw a spiral for the folded tip of the mane.

Draw Rarity Pony 17

Step 17: Use the line on the right side as a guide to draw Rarity's front legs. Follow the basic path of the guide as you make the first leg thicker using curved lines. The leg should bend near the top. Sketch the lightly at first to get the structure right. Add the visible part of the other front leg on the other side. The bottom part of the legs should be wider than the top.

Draw Rarity Pony 18

Step 18: Do the same thing with Rarity's hind legs. Follow the path of the line and thicken up the shape of the leg. Remember to make the bottom part a bit wider. On the right side of the leg, add a similar line to indicate the hind leg on the other side.

Draw Rarity Pony 19

Step 19: Use the initial oval shape under the head as a guide to draw Rarity's body. Follow the basic path of the oval as you darken the lines. Darken the line under Rarity's head for her neck.

Draw Rarity Pony 20

Step 20: Rarity's tail is also a bit tricky, so it's divided into two parts. First follow the basic path of the guide as you draw two curved lines that make up the base of the tail. Then draw the middle portion of the tail that curves in toward the hind legs and angles at the bottom to form a shape similar to a square.

Step 21: Add the end portion of Rarity's tail by drawing a series of curved lines to the left of the first section and a small spiral for the tip.

Step 22: That's it! You now have a nice sketch of Rarity from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.

Step 23: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Rarity! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Rarity drawing.

Final Step: For a completely finished Rarity drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Draw her cutie mark on her upper thigh. Rarity's cutie mark consists of three light blue diamonds with a few blue lines within the shapes. Color her mane and tail purple. Rarity's eyelids are light blue, and her eyes are blue. Her body is white, so leave it blank. That's it! You now have a completed drawing of Rarity from My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic.
