How to Draw Hiro

Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Hiro Hamada from Disney's Big Hero 6. A new cartoon drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!

Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

Draw Hiro Big Hero 1

Step 1: Start by drawing a big circle as a guide for the top half of Hiro's head. The circle doesn't have to be perfect. It's just a guide. Leave room at the top for his hair and at the bottom for his jaw.

Step 2: Under the circle, draw a line as a guide for Hiro's jaw and chin. The line should be similar in shape to the letter V, with the bottom corner being more round.

Step 3: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the entire head shape, one vertical and one horizontal. These will be construction lines that will help you place Hiro's facial features later on. Bend the lines a bit to contour to the shape of the head.

Step 4: Draw two small shapes as guides for Hiro's eyes. Draw them sitting on top of the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical construction line. The shapes of the eyes should be similar to half-circles. The eye on the left should be a little smaller than the one on the right because of the perspective.

Step 5: Under the head, draw two short, curved lines as guide for Hiro's neck.

Step 6: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic Hiro shape. Now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.

Step 7: Darken the shape of the half-circles inside the head to create Hiro's eyes. Make the top part of the eyes thicker to represent the eyelashes.

Step 8: Inside each eye, draw small circle for Hiro's irises. Inside each iris, draw an even smaller circle for the pupils and shade them in. Add yet another even tinier circle inside each iris to represent glare.

Step 9: Close to the bottom edge of the main circle, draw a couple of small lines for the bottom part of Hiro's nose and nostrils. The lines should be right on top of the vertical construction line.

Step 10: Now add the sides of Hiro's nose as small curved lines and draw a slightly longer line above the nostrils for the tip of the nose.

Draw Hiro Big Hero 11

Step 11: Under the nose, draw a shape for Hiro's mouth. The shape should be similar to the letter D on its side. Place the mouth just below the bottom edge of the main circle. Draw a small line under the mouth for Hiro's bottom lip.

Step 12: Inside the mouth on the top side, draw two rectangle-like shapes for the top row of teeth. Hiro has a gap in his teeth, so be sure to include a sizable space between the two rectangle-like shapes. Add a small curved line under the teeth for the tongue.

Step 13: Use the initial shapes as guides to draw the bottom part of Hiro's head. Follow the path of the initial guides as you darken the lines but make the face curvier. Darken the lines at the bottom too for the neck.

Step 14: Hiro's hair is a bit tricky, so it's divided into five parts. First draw the front part of his hair that almost covers his eyes. Draw it as a series of long lines above the eyes. The two lines in the middle are similar to the letter V. The lines on the sides are just diagonal lines.

Step 15: Draw Hiro's eyebrows above the eyes as two long, thick shapes. Notice that his eyebrows are behind his hair, so don't overlap the lines.

Step 16: Now draw the top part of Hiro's hair. Hiro has a thick head of hair, so draw the top part of the hair way up above the eyes. Pay attention to the distance between the top edge of the main circle and the top of the hair. The shape of the top of the hair should consist of a bunch of curved, spiky clumps of hair.

Step 17: Add the left side of Hiro's hair using more curved, spiky lines. Don't draw this side of the hair too far away from the side of the face. It should come down very close to his cheek.

Draw Hiro Big Hero 18

Step 18: Draw the right side of Hiro's hair the same way. Use a series of curved, spiky lines to represent the clumps of hair. This side of the hair should be a little farther away from his face because of the way his head is turned.

Draw Hiro Big Hero 19

Step 19: Add a few more curved lines within the shape of Hiro's hair to give the hair more detail and volume. Draw the lines long, keeping in mind the way the hair moves down in big clumps.

Step 20: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Hiro from Disney's Big Hero 6. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the next step.

Step 21: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Hiro! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Hiro drawing.

Final Step: For a completely finished Hiro drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Hiro's hair and eyebrows are black. His eyes and the inside of his mouth is brown. His tongue is dark red. His skin is peach, but if you don't have peach, improvise and use yellow-orange or light brown. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Hiro Hamada from Disney's Big Hero 6.
