How to Draw Steven Universe

Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Cartoon Network's Steven Universe. A new drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!

Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

Draw Steven Universe 1

Step 1: Start by drawing a small circle near the top of the page as a guide for Steven Universe's head. The circle doesn't have to be perfect. It's just a guide. Leave enough room at the bottom for the rest of the body.

Step 2: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the head, one vertical and one horizontal. Bend the lines so that they contour to the shape of the circle. These will be construction lines that will help you place Steven Universe's facial features later on.

Step 3: Draw two small ovals as guides for Steven Universe's eyes. Draw them sitting on top of the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical construction line. The oval on the left should be smaller because of perspective.

Step 4: On the right side of the head, draw a small arc similar to a backward letter C as a guide for Steven Universe's ear.

Step 5: Under the head, draw a circle as a guide for Steven Universe's body. This circle should be just a bit bigger than the circle for the head.

Step 6: On the right side, draw an angled line as a guide for Steven Universe's arm. The line should start under the head and bend at the tip. On the end of the line, at the bottom, draw a small circle as a guide for Steven's hand.

Step 7: Draw another line on the left side of the body as a guide for Steven Universe's other arm. This line should be straight with a slight diagonal orientation. At the tip of the line, draw a small circle as a guide for the hand. Add an arc to the left of the circle as a guide for the fingers and a small line to the right for the thumb.

Step 8: Under the circle for the body, draw two short, straight lines as guides for the legs. Under the lines, draw two small ovals that are oriented horizontally as guides for Steven Universe's feet.

Step 9: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic Steven Universe shape, now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.

Draw Steven Universe 10

Step 10: Use the construction lines as guides to draw the nose between the eyes. Steven Universe's nose consists of a curved line to the left of the vertical construction line that partially covers the eye on the left. Add a couple of tiny slits within the shape of the nose for the nostrils.

Step 11: Darken the initial ovals inside the head to create the shape of Steven Universe's eyes. Draw a small oval inside each eye and shade it in for the pupils. Make sure that the eye on the left doesn't overlap the nose.

Step 12: High above the eyes, under the top edge of the main circle, draw two small shapes for Steven Universe's eyebrows. The shape of the eyebrows is similar to small long, curved ovals.

Step 13: On the bottom half of the head, draw a shape for the open mouth. The shape is curvy and similar to a bean.

Draw Steven Universe 14

Step 14: Inside the open mouth at the top, draw a wavy line for the row of teeth. Add another curved line at the bottom for Steven Universe's tongue.

Draw Steven Universe 15

Step 15: Use the initial circle shape as a guide to draw Steven Universe's face. Follow the basic path of the circle but make to top shape of the head thinner and the bottom part wider. The line's tip curves at the top near the ear to create the side burn.

Draw Steven Universe 16

Step 16: Darken the backward C-shape to create Steven Universe's ear. Draw a series of short, curved lines to draw the small afro-like hairdo. There are five bumps that go around the head to create Steven's hair.

Draw Steven Universe 17

Step 17: Use the line and circle on the right side as a guide to draw Steven Universe's arm and hand. Follow the basic path of the line as you make the shape of the arm thicker. Add a line in the middle to create the sleeve. Draw the folded fingers within the shape of the circle as a series of small, curved lines.

Draw Steven Universe 18

Step 18: Use the initial circle as a guide to draw Steven Universe's shirt using curved lines. Inside that shape, draw the T-shirt's star design. Use the picture above as reference to get the shape of the star right.

Draw Steven Universe 19

Step 19: Draw the arm and hand on the left side by using the initial line and circle as guides. Follow the path of the line as you make the arm thicker, and draw a curved line near the middle for the sleeve. Use the arc as a guide to draw the shapes of Steven Universe's fingers using a series of short, curved lines. Add the thumb too.

Draw Steven Universe 20

Step 20: Use the lines under the T-shirt as guides to draw Steven Universe's pants. Follow the path of the lines as you thicken up the shapes of the legs. Draw a curved line at the end of each pant leg for the cuffs and a couple of lines near the top for the zipper cover.

Draw Steven Universe 21

Step 21: Draw Steven Universe's feet and flip-flops using the initial ovals as guides. Add two lines at the bottom for the soles of the flip-flops and the toes using a series of curved lines. Draw the flip-flop's straps as a pair of curved lines.

Draw Steven Universe 22

Step 22: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Steven Universe. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.

Step 23: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Steven Universe! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Steven drawing.

Final Step: For a completely finished Steven Universe drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Steven's hair and eyebrows are black. His skin is peach, but if you don't have peach, improvise and use yellow-orange or light brown. The inside of his mouth is brown. The tongue, T-shirt and flip-flops are pink. The star on the T-shirt is yellow, and the pants are blue. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Cartoon Network's Steven Universe.
