Draw Mulan

Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Mulan from Walt Disney's Mulan. A new drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!

Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

 Draw Mulan Step 1

Step 1: Start with a big oval in the middle of the page. The oval doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a basic guide for Mulan’s head.

 Draw Mulan Step 2

Step 2: Under the oval, draw two curved lines as guides for Mulan’s neck and shoulders.

 Draw Mulan Step 3

Step 3: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the oval, one vertical and one horizontal. Bend the lines so they follow the contour of the shape. Draw two smaller lines in between the horizontal construction line and the bottom of the oval. These will be construction lines that will help you place Mulan’s facial features later on.

 Draw Mulan Step 4

Step 4: On top of the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical construction line, draw two shapes that resemble long footballs as guides for Mulan's eyes. The shape on the left should be smaller because of perspective.

 Draw Mulan Step 5

Step 5: Draw a curved line similar to a backward letter C on the right side of the head as a guide for Mulan's ear.

 Draw Mulan Step 6

Step 6: Draw a long, curved line over Mulan's head as a guide for her hair. The ends of the line meet at the shoulders.

 Draw Mulan Step 7

Step 7: You’re almost done! You have the basic shape for Mulan, so now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.

 Draw Mulan Step 18

Step 8: Darken in the shapes of Mulan's eyes. Draw thick curved eyelashes on the outer, upper corner of each eye.

 Draw Mulan Step 9

Step 9: Inside each eye, draw a circle for Mulan's iris. Inside each iris draw smaller circle for her pupil and an even smaller circle to represent glare. Shade in the pupil.

 Draw Mulan Step 10

Step 10: On top of the smaller of the horizontal construction lines, draw three tiny curved lines for Mulan's nose and nostrils.

 Draw Mulan Step 11

Step 11: Now draw Mulan's mouth right on top of the lowest of the horizontal construction lines. Her upper lip is similar to a very wide letter M with a line underneath it. Mulan's lower lip is just two wide letter U's on top of each other.

 Draw Mulan Step 12

Step 12: Darken the shape of Mulan's ear. Draw a wavy line within the shape to represent the ears inner structure.

 Draw Mulan Step 13

Step 13: Draw the front part of Mulan's hair on the top part of the oval. Start with a curved line on the left side that follows the outer part of the main oval, then draw another curved line down to her ear. In between those lines, draw another curved line as a stray hair.

 Draw Mulan Step 14

Step 14: Darken the outer guide line to finish with Mulan's hair.

 Draw Mulan Step 15

Step 15: Tighten the shape of Mulan's face by using the main oval as a guide. Notice how the left side of her face comes inward a bit near the eye and on the right side to meet the ear.

 Draw Mulan Step 16

Step 16: Above each eye draw a thick curved line for Mulan's eyebrows. The eyebrow on the right side is hiding behind her hair, so only draw the visible portion of it.

 Draw Mulan Step 17

Step 17: Darken the lines that make up Mulan's neck and shoulders. Draw a couple of vertical lines below each shoulder to represent the top part of her coat.

 Draw Mulan Step 18

Step 18: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Mulan. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.

 Draw Mulan Step 19

Step 19: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Mulan! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Mulan drawing.

 Draw Mulan Final Step

Final Step: For a completely finished Mulan drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color Mulan's hair black. Her eyes are a dark brown. Her skin is peach. If you don’t have peach, improvise and use light brown or orange. Add a bit of pink for her rosy cheeks. Her coat is dark green and yellow green. Her lips are dark red. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Disney’s Mulan.
