How to Draw Sally

Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Sally from Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. A new cartoon drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!

Intro: Start drawing Sally with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don't press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

How to Draw Sally Step 1

Step 1: To draw Sally, start with a circle near the top of the page. You don't have to draw the circle perfectly. It's just a basic shape for Sally's head. Draw two angled lines under the circle as a guide for Sally's neck and shoulders.

Step 2: Next draw two intersecting lines across the circle, one vertical and one horizontal. When drawing the lines, bend them so that they contour to the shape of the sphere. These will be construction lines that will help you place Sally's facial features later on.

How to Draw Sally Step 3

Step 3: Sally has big eyes, so draw two big circles that sit on top of the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical line. Under the horizontal construction line, draw a long curved line as a guide for Sally's mouth.

Step 4: Draw a guide for Sally's hair by drawing a line that starts at the left shoulder, goes over around her head and ends at the right shoulder.

How to Draw Sally Step 5

Step 5: That's it for the initial sketch of Sally from Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas! You have the basic shape for Sally, so now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.

Step 6: Tighten the shapes of Sally's eyes and angle them a bit at the top. Draw a curved line inside each of them to represent Sally's eyelids.

How to Draw Sally Step 7

Step 7: On top of Sally's eyelids, draw a series of V-shaped lines (four sets for each eye) to represent her eyelashes. Inside each eye draw a small circle for her pupil and shade it in.

How to Draw Sally Step 8

Step 8: Draw Sally's nose as an angled line that starts at the left side of the right eye then angles to the left below the horizontal construction line. Also draw a small horizontal line below Sally's nose.

How to Draw Sally Step 9

Step 9: Darken the line that makes Sally's mouth and draw her lips. Draw her top lip so it resembles a stretched-out letter M, and draw her lower lip so looks like a stretched-out letter U. Draw Sally's lower lip off-center a little bit.

How to Draw Sally Step 10

Step 10: Draw a series of lines to the left and right of Sallly's lips that represent stitches. After all Sally is a ragdoll patched together by Doctor Finkelstein.

How to Draw Sally Step 11

Step 11: Use the initial line as a guide to draw in Sally's hair. Draw another long line below the initial hair guideline to represent the front of her hair that comes down over her face. Also draw a short line at the top to split her hair in two. Draw a few lines where the hair splits for extra detail.

How to Draw Sally Step 12

Step 12: Darken the lower part of Sally's face using the original circle as a drawing guide. When drawing her jaw, give it a more narrow and pointy look.

How to Draw Sally Step 13

Step 13: Draw a long curved line that goes from the bottom of Sally's hair across her face and down to her cheek. Draw smaller lines that criss-cross it to represent more stitches.

Step 14: Darken Sally's neck and shoulders, and draw a couple of curved vertical lines for the top of her dress.

Step 15: Finally, draw a series of lines across Sally's neck and chest to represent all the stitches that she has.

How to Draw Sally Step 16

Step 16: That's it! You now have a nice sketch of Sally from Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.

How to Draw Sally Step 17

Step 17: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Sally drawing.

How to Draw Sally Final Step

Final Step: For a completely finished Sally drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color her hair and lips red, her skin a light blue and her dress yellow. That's it! You now have a completed drawing of Sally from Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas.
