Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

 

Step 1: Draw a big circle near the bottom of the page as a guide for Snowball's head. First draw four small marks to indicate the height and width of the circle, then connect the marks using curved lines. Sketch lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. But the circle doesn't have to be perfect. It's just a guide. If you do want a perfect circle, trace the outer rim of a glass, a lid or any other object with a circular edge.

 

Step 2: Draw a curved horizontal line across the circle. The left end should be lower than the right. Now draw a curved vertical line across the bunny's head. Place the line a bit closer to the right edge of the circle. These are construction lines that will help you place Snowball's facial features later on.

 

Step 3: Draw two long, thin arcs on top of the head as guides for Snowball's ears. Pay attention to the length of the arcs. They should be almost one and a half times the height of the head. The arcs should also be narrow at the bottom and top and a bit wider slightly above the middle. The arc on the left should be tilted diagonally a bit, while the one on the left should be almost vertical. The arc on the right should also be thinner because of the perspective.

 

Step 4: Draw two short, curved lines under the head as guides for Snowball the bunny's small hands. Draw the lines on either side of the head. They should be very thin, short arcs on their sides.

 

Step 5: Draw the shape of Snowball's body by first drawing a long, curved horizontal line at the bottom. Pay attention to how far this line is from the head. Connect this line to the head with short vertical lines on the sides to finish the guide for the body.

Step 6: Draw a small oval-like shape on the lower left side of the body as a guide for the first foot. Add a long curved line on the lower right side of the body as a guide for Snowball's other foot.

 

That's it for the initial sketch! From this point on, press harder with your pencil to get a more defined drawing.

 

Step 7: Draw a small triangle right on top of the vertical construction line above the horizontal line for Snowball's nose. The nose basically consists of a V- shaped line at the bottom with a curved line at the top.

 

Step 8: Draw a small curved line on either side of the nose for the shape of the muzzle. Draw a small, curved, vertical line above the upper, right corner of the nose to complete Snowball's muzzle.

 

Step 9: Draw a big circle on either side of the muzzle for Snowball's eyes. Sketch lightly at first. When you get the size and placement right, darken the line. The eyes should be sitting right on top of the horizontal construction line. The eye on the right should be a bit smaller because of the perspective.

Step 10: Inside each eye, draw a smaller circle for the irises. The eye on the right should be smaller, and its left edge should be covered by the muzzle slightly. Draw a tiny circle on the upper right edge of each iris to represent glare. Inside each iris, draw a slightly smaller circle for the pupils. Shade the smaller circles to make Snowball's pupils a bit darker.

 

Step 11: Draw a series of quick, short strokes above the eyes to represent Snowball's furrowed brow. The strokes for the brow on the left should start above the upper right side of the eye, then curve to the left and angle back down to the left side of the eye. The brow on the right side should be a mirror image of the first one but be smaller and thinner because of the perspective.

 

Step 12: Draw a long curved line under the muzzle for the top part of the bunny's open mouth. The ends of this line should be very close to the horizontal construction line. Draw a small line below the nose too. Add a smaller line on either end of the long line for Snowball's smile lines.

 

Step 13: Add the bottom part of Snowball's open mouth by first drawing a small mark at the bottom to indicate how big the open mouth will be. Then connect the mark with the top part of the mouth using curved lines to form a big U-shaped line. Inside the mouth, at the top, draw a small square-like shape with a line through the middle for the bunny's front teeth. Add a similar shape at the bottom, slightly above the line for the bottom two teeth. Draw two curved lines on either side of the lower teeth for the gums.

 

Step 14: Draw the tongue inside the mouth, right above the bottom teeth. Snowball's tongue consists of a series of curved lines. Pause the video to get the shape right. Draw a row of overlapping circles inside the mouth, on the left side, for the molars. Add another row of overlapping circles to the right of the tongue for the other set of molars.

Step 15: Draw two curved lines above the tongue for the back of the throat. Draw a few more curved lines on the top part of the throat for the uvula. Add a row of three small overlapping circles on either side of the throat for Snowball's top molars.

 

Step 16: Use the long, thin arcs on top of the head as guides to draw Snowball's bunny ears. Use a series of quick, short strokes as you follow the basic path of the guide to create a fuzzy texture for the ears. Make the tip of the ear a bit longer and pointier than the initial arc guide. Draw the ear on the right the same way as the one on the left.

Follow the basic path of the guide while using quick, short strokes and make the top part longer and pointier. Draw the ear opening within the shape of each ear using quick, short strokes too. The shape of Snowball's ear opening should be very similar to the shape of the outer ear itself but thinner. The shape of the opening for the ear on the right should be a lot thinner because of perspective.

 

Step 17: Use the initial circle as a guide to draw the shape of Snowball's head. Make the shape of the head wider as you follow the basic path of the circle. Use quick, short strokes as you draw the head to give it a furry texture. Make the other side of the head wider too. The bottom half of the bunny's head should be wider than the top. Take your time as you draw the quick, short strokes to get the fur- like texture right.

 

Step 18: Darken the arc on the left create Snowball's arm. Add three small curved lines at the tip to separate the individual fingers. Draw the arm on the right by using the other curved line as a guide. Don't forget the fingers at the tip! Add a small shape similar to a half-circle to each palm for the fleshy pad of skin.

 

Step 19: Use quick, short strokes as you follow the basic path of the guide under the head to create the shape of the body.

Step 20: Darken the shapes under the body to create Snowball's feet. Add smaller lines to separate the individual toes. The foot on the right is facing to the right , so it should be longer and only two toes should be visible.

 

Step 21: Draw a curved line that's made up of quick, short strokes on the left side of the body for Snowball's puffy tail peeking out from behind.

 

Step 22: For a more finished look, carefully go over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker.

 

Step 23: After inking, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser for a cleaner drawing.

 

Final Step: Color your drawing Snowball, the bunny from The Secret Life of Pets, using color pencils, markers or even crayons! Use pink for the inside of the ears, the nose and the tongue. Use blue for the eyes. Use brown for the throat and inside of the mouth. Add it lightly at first, then build up to the level of color you want. Use red right on top of the brown for the rest of the inside of the mouth. Add some pink too. Use pink on the palm pads as well.

Use gray throughout Snowball's body to give your drawing more dimension and volume. As you add the gray, use long strokes that imitate the texture of the fur. Don't overdo it with the gray. Use it lightly, only to emphasize the shapes. You can also skip the gray entirely.
