How to Draw Pinocchio

Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Walt Disney's Pinocchio. A new cartoon drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!

Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

Draw Pinocchio 1

Step 1: Start by drawing a big circle near the middle of the page. This will be a guide for Pinocchio's head. The circle doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a guide.

Draw Pinocchio 2

Step 2: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the head, one vertical and one horizontal. Bend the lines a bit so that they contour to the circle. These will be construction lines that will help you place Pinocchio's facial features later on.

Draw Pinocchio 3

Step 3: Draw two small ovals as guides for Pinocchio's eyes. Draw them sitting on top of the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical construction line. The oval on the left should be a bit smaller because of perspective.

Draw Pinocchio 4

Step 4: Draw a wider oval with a horizontal orientation under the eye on the left as a guide for Pinocchio's nose. Position this oval so that the edges are touching the the construction lines at the top and on the right.

Draw Pinocchio 5

Step 5: In the space between the nose and the bottom of the main circle, draw a shape similar to a sideways letter D as a guide for Pinocchio's mouth.

Draw Pinocchio 6

Step 6: Draw a curved line similar to a backward letter C as a guide for Pinocchio's ear. The top part of the arc should touch the horizontal construction line, and the side should touch the edge of the main circle.

Step 7: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic shape of Walt Disney's Pinocchio. Now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.

Step 8: Darken the ovals inside the head to create Pinocchio's eyes. Draw a small curved line below the eye on the right for the top part of the cheek. Draw a curved line above each eye for Pinocchio's eyebrows.

Step 9: Inside each eye draw a circle for Pinocchio's irises. Inside each iris, add a dot in the middle for the pupils. On the side of each pupil, draw a tiny circle to represent glare.

Draw Pinocchio 10

Step 10: Use the oval under the eye on the left as a guide to draw Pinocchio's nose. Follow the path of the oval as you darken the line but make the tip of the nose pointier.

Draw Pinocchio 11

Step 11: Draw Pinocchio's mouth under the nose by using the initial shape as a guide. Make the top line of the mouth longer and curve it upward more. Draw another curved arc under the mouth for the bottom lip. Inside the mouth, draw two small curved lines for Pinocchio's tongue.

Draw Pinocchio 12

Step 12: Draw the front part of Pinocchio's hair and the rim of the hat on his head. The front part of his head is basically a wavy line above the eyebrows that moves outside of the circle, forms a point, and then curves up over the circle. That same line becomes the rim of the hat as it moves diagonally to the right of the head next to the ear.

Step 13: Darken the C-shaped arc to create Pinocchio's ear. Draw a small line within the shape for the ear's structure. Draw a curved line that goes from the top of the ear to the bottom of the hat for the side of the hair.

Draw Pinocchio 14

Step 14: Now draw the second part of Pinocchio's hat by drawing a few curved lines on the top and left side of the main circle. The curved line on the right is more bulgy than the thin curved line on top.

Step 15: Draw a line above the brim for the band on Pinocchio's hat. On top of the band, draw two curved lines that come together at the top to form the feather on his hat.

Draw Pinocchio 16

Step 16: Draw a curved line behind the feather for the top part of Pinocchio's heat. Draw a line inside the feather for extra detail.

Draw Pinocchio 17

Step 17: Use the main circle as a guide to draw Pinocchio's face. Follow the basic path of the circle as you darken the face. On the left side, the line comes inward more toward Pinocchio's eye, then goes back out again to form the cheek. On the right side, before it gets to the ear, it splits up to form the back part of the hair.

Step 18 (optional): Under Pinocchio's head, draw a series of curved lines to create his big bow. Use the image above as reference to get the shape of the bow right.

Draw Pinocchio 19

Step 19 (optional): Draw a couple of lines under Pinocchio's head for his neck. Draw a couple more longer lines on the side for the collar.

Draw Pinocchio 20

Step 20: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Walt Disney's Pinocchio. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the next step.

Draw Pinocchio 21

Step 21: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Pinocchio! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Pinocchio drawing.

Draw Pinocchio

Final Step: For a completely finished Pinocchio drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color the main part of the hat yellow and the feather red. The band on the hat, his eyes and the bow are light blue. His hair is black. Pinocchio's skin is peach, but if you don't have peach, you can use yellow-orange or light brown. His nose pink and tongue are pink. Add some pink to his cheeks too. The inside of his mouth is brown. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Walt Disney's Pinocchio!
