Materials You’ll Need
Before starting, gather these basic drawing supplies:
- Pencil (an HB lead pencil is best for light sketches)
- Eraser
- Black ink pen or marker
- Drawing paper
- Colored pencils or markers
Sketch Guidelines
Building a solid initial sketch is key to getting your character's proportions right. Draw these simple shapes on your drawing paper first before adding the details on Gary.
Step 1: Head and Body Framework
- Draw the Head Circle: With your pencil, lightly sketch a circle near the top of your page. If you're having trouble drawing a circle, find something round to trace. Leave plenty of room below for the rest of the body.
- Add Facial Guides: Sketch a slightly curved horizontal guide line across the head, slightly higher than the center. Add a vertical guide line at the top.
- Outline the Neck Line: Starting on the bottom right side of the head, draw a long curved line going to the left and then downward for the neck.
- Build the Coiled Body: Draw a large rectangular shape below the head for the coiled section. Make this shape very large, about five to six times bigger than the head. Divide this large shape in half with a curved horizontal line to help you place the coils later.

Step 2: Drawing the Facial Features
- Create the Eyes and Pupils: Draw a couple of small ovals inside the head. Place the right eye on top of the horizontal guide. Make the left eye thinner because the head is turned. Inside each eye, draw a thin vertical oval and shade it in for the pupils. Add structural lines around the eyes.
- Shape the Muzzle and Mouth: Draw a curved line to the left for the top part of the muzzle, ending with a short vertical line. From there, sketch a long, wavy line that curves up, down, and up again to finish on the right edge of the initial circle. Add a small smile line on the right.
- Add Snake Details: Sketch small circles at the top for the snakelike nostrils and heat sensors. Gary only has one fang, so draw a thin, pointy triangle shape for his single fang.
- Finish Mouth Details: Draw the bottom jaw by following the lower edge of the head circle, curving it up to the right with short, angled lines for a scaly texture. Add a short line for the inner mouth and long curved lines for his tongue. Sketch a curved line on the left to finish the face structure.

Step 3: Drawing the Rest of the Body
- Form the Neck: Darken the curved line under the head and add a second, parallel line to the left to create the neck section, keeping the top thinner than the bottom.
- Shape the Coils: Follow the path of your large body guidelines to draw the coiled sections. Use curved horizontal lines to show the body looping in front of and behind itself. Make the sections wider as they approach the bottom.
- Add the Tail: At the very bottom, curve the line upward into a thin point to create the tip of the tail peeking out.
- Add Scale Texture: Draw a long curved line following the body shape to separate the main scales from the underbelly. Draw short horizontal lines along the left side and tail for the scales on the underbelly. Add scattered, small U-shaped and C-shaped lines across the main body to indicate a scaly texture.

The Finishing Touches
Now it's time to add the permanent outlines, clean up your sketch, and bring Gary to life with vivid color!

- Ink the Drawing: Slowly and carefully trace over your final pencil lines with a black permanent ink pen or marker to lock in your shapes and texture details.
- Erase Guidelines: Once the ink is completely dry, use your eraser to remove all underlying pencil construction guides and structural marks for a clean finish.
- Coloring: Fill in your drawing using colored pencils or markers!

- Add Shading: Apply a darker shade along the bottom curves of the coils and neck to build depth and emphasize shadowed areas.
- Final Polish: Review your overall coloring and lines, tweaking your drawing until you are sure you are happy with the result. Your drawing is now complete!

Final Tips for Drawing Cartoon Characters
Improving your drawing skills takes practice and patience. Keep these techniques in mind:
- Sketch lightly before committing to final lines so mistakes are easy to erase.
- Use construction shapes to maintain correct proportions across the head and body.
With consistent practice, drawing characters like Gary from Zootopia 2 becomes much easier and enjoyable!
