Materials You’ll Need
Before starting, gather these basic drawing supplies:
- Pencil (an HB lead pencil is best for light sketches)
- Eraser
- Black ink pen or marker
- Drawing paper
- Colored pencils or markers
Sketch Guidelines
Building a solid initial sketch is key to getting your character's proportions right. Lightly draw these simple shapes on your paper before adding the details on Hamm.
Step 1: Head and Body Guidelines
- Draw the Head Circle: With your pencil, lightly sketch a circle to serve as the foundation for Hamm's head. Mark the height and width with small dashes first, then connect them with smooth curves.
- Add Facial Guides: Draw a long, curved horizontal line roughly a quarter of the way down from the top of the head circle. Add a shorter, vertical guideline on the upper left side.
- Structure the Plump Body: Sketch a much larger circle to the left of the head. Position the top and right side so it overlaps slightly behind the head shape.

Step 2: Snout Tube and Leg Guides
- Form the Snout Base: Draw a circular guide inside the lower portion of the head, using the horizontal facial line to mark the top boundary.
- Extend the Snout Tip: Sketch a slightly smaller circle shifting slightly forward and extending just past the front edge of the head.
- Position the Stubby Legs: Add three large, U-shaped lines underneath the body circle as guides for three of the four legs.

Step 3: Drawing the Facial Features
- Create the Small Eyes: Place two tiny circles directly along the horizontal guideline, keeping them close together on either side of the vertical mark. Add small arcs above for the eyebrows.
- Define the Nostrils and Snout: Darken the snout outlines. Draw two small vertical ovals near the center of the tip circle for his nostrils.
- Shape the Smile and Mouth: Draw a line curving up and to the right from the bottom of the nose. Add a wide U-shape underneath for the open mouth, and draw curved lines inside for the top and bottom teeth.
- Add the Pointed Ears: Draw two small, triangular arcs on top of the head, angling the left ear slightly to match the head tilt. Add inner lines for the ear openings.

The Finishing Touches
Now it's time to add the classic piggy bank features and bring Hamm to life with permanent ink and clean color using your favorite colored pencils or markers!

- Detail the Feet: Add small, rounded triangular shapes and diamond-like shapes to the tips of the leg guides for his feet.
- Add the Slot and Stopper: Sketch two parallel curved lines on his upper back for the coin slot. Draw a flat, horizontal rectangular piece under his belly for the rubber stopper.
- Ink and Color the Drawing: Trace your final lines carefully with a black fine-liner pen, erase the initial pencil guides with a plastic eraser, and color his body with a warm, classic cartoon pink!

Final Tips for Drawing Cartoon Characters
Improving your drawing skills takes practice and patience. Keep these techniques in mind:
- Sketch lightly before committing to final lines so mistakes are easy to erase.
- Use construction guides to maintain correct proportions across the head and body.

With consistent practice, drawing characters like Hamm from Toy Story becomes much easier and enjoyable!
