Materials You’ll Need
Before starting, gather these basic drawing supplies:
- Pencil (an HB lead pencil is best for light sketches)
- Eraser
- Black ink pen or marker
- Drawing paper
- Colored pencils or markers
Sketch Guidelines
Building a solid initial sketch is key to getting your character's proportions right. Draw these simple shapes first before adding the details on Kuromi.
Step 1: Guidelines Pencil Sketch
- Draw the Oval Head: Sketch a vertical line down the center of your page to determine the height. Mark the midpoint, and draw a horizontal line across. Make the horizontal line longer than the vertical line, as Kuromi’s head is wider than it is tall. Mark equal distances from the center on all four points of the cross. Connect these marks with light, curved lines to create a wide oval. Keep the top of the oval highly curved and the bottom slightly flatter.
- Create Ear Guidelines: Sketch two diagonal, sloping lines extending upward from near the center of the head plus sign.
- Structure the Body and Legs: Extend the vertical center line downward and sketch a small circle for the body below the head. Add two short vertical lines down from the body circle, close them off with a horizontal line, and split them with an off-center vertical line to give the body a slight turn.

Step 2: Draw the Facial Details
- Sketch the Mischievous Eyes: Just below the horizontal guideline and close to the center, draw a "U" shape for the right eye, cap the top with a sharp, sloping line, and add lashes on the top right. Draw a similar, slightly smaller "U" shape higher up on the left side due to the head tilt, adding lashes on the top left. Leave a tiny circle inside each for a highlight.
- Add the Nose and Mouth: Place a tiny oval nose between the eyes, leaning toward the left, and add a short, subtle curve right below it for her mouth.
- Outline the Jester Hood: Draw a wide, V-shaped line directly above the eyes, curving the outer edges down close to them. Sketch small circles at the tips of your upper diagonal guidelines, and connect them back to the head with triangular, sloping lines.
- Form the Skull Emblem: Sketch a small circle in the center of her forehead, add a small rectangle at the bottom divided by vertical lines for teeth, and place two small ovals inside for the eye sockets.

Step 3: Draw the Rest of the Body
- Position the Crossed Arms: Inside the body circle, draw a curved line sloping down and to the right to form the bottom edge of her crossed arms. Add a parallel line above it to complete the top arm, and a small curve below for the visible part of her other arm.
- Create the Jester Collar: Create her signature collar by drawing sharp, zigzag lines that resemble a sideways "W" or "M" on either side of her neck. Draw small circles on each of the pointy tips.
- Attach the Tail: On the right side of her lower body, sketch two parallel curved lines extending outward and finish the tail by adding a sharp, triangular tip.

The Finishing Touches
Now it's time to ink your lines, clean up extra pencil marks, and bring Kuromi to life with vivid color!

- Ink and Erase Guidelines: Use a fine-tip black pen or permanent marker to trace over your final pencil lines, rounding out the sharp corners of your initial guidelines to make her look soft and animated. Incorporate a small curved line near the bottom of each leg block for her feet. Allow the ink to dry completely, then gently erase all underlying pencil marks.
- Color Your Drawing: Fill in her entire jester hood, ears, torso, legs, and eyes with solid black. Be sure to color around the skull emblem on her forehead and the collar around her neck, leaving the tiny eye highlights completely white. Add pink to the skull and circles on the collar.

Final Tips for Drawing Cartoon Characters
Improving your drawing skills takes practice and patience. Keep these techniques in mind:
- Sketch lightly before committing to final lines so mistakes are easy to erase.
- Use construction shapes to maintain correct proportions across the head and body.

With consistent practice, drawing characters like Kuromi from Sanrio becomes much easier and enjoyable!
