How to Draw Michaelangelo

Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Michelangelo from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. A new drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!

Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

Draw Michaelangelo 1

Step 1: Start by drawing a big circle near the middle of the page. This will be the basic shape for Michelangelo's head. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a guide.

Step 2: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the circle, one vertical and one horizontal. The vertical line should split the middle in half, and the horizontal line should be closer to the top. These will be construction lines that will help you when you're learning how to draw Michelangelo's facial features later on.

Step 3: Sitting on top of the horizontal construction line and on either side of the vertical construction line, draw two small shapes as guides for Michelangelo's eyes. The shapes should be similar to half-circles.

Step 4: Under the horizontal construction line, draw a shape as a guide for Michelangelo's mouth. The shape is similar to a skinny letter D on its side. It should be closer to the bottom of the circle than to the horizontal construction line.

Step 5: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic shape of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle character Michelangelo. Now go in and tighten your Michelangelo drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.

Step 6: Draw a curved line under Michelangelo's eyes, right on top of the horizontal construction line, as the top part of his nose. The length of this line should be about as long as the guide for the mouth. Darken the outline for Michelangelo's eyes and make the ends of the shapes pointier.

Step 7: Inside each eye, draw an oval for the irises. Inside each iris, add a tiny dot off to the side to represent glare. In the middle of each iris, draw another oval and shade it in for Michelangelo's pupils.

Step 8: Use the D-like shape as a guide to draw Michelangelo's mouth. Make the tip of the mouth a bit rounder, and the top of the mouth should be curvier too. Inside Michelangelo's mouth, on the top side, draw a horizontal line to represent the top teeth.

Step 9: On the bottom part of Michelangelo's mouth, draw a smaller line for the bottom teeth. Draw a curved line above the teeth for the tongue.

Step 10: Draw a wavy line around Michelangelo's eyes for his mask. Start the line on one side of the nose, then move it all the way around the eyes until you reach the other side of the nose. The top part of the mask should dip down a bit in between the eyes. The sides of Michelangelo's mask should also be narrower than the original circle.

Step 11: Use the original circle as a guide to draw the top of Michelangelo's head. Follow the basic path of the circle and darken the line to create the head. The sides of the head should be narrower than the original circle.

Step 12: Draw the bottom part of Michelangelo's head by using the original circle as a guide. Follow the basic path of the circle as you darken the line but make the sides bulge out more to create the cheeks.

Step 13: On the right side of Michelangelo's head, draw the ends of his mask. The ends of the mask basically consist of two points that have bulging sides.

Step 14: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Michelangelo from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.

Step 15: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Michelangelo! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Michelangelo drawing.

Final Step: For a completely finished Michelangelo drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Michelangelo's skin is light green. You can use dark green on the side of his head to give the head more dimension and volume. Add a few small circles on his cheeks using brown to give him freckles. Color his eyes blue, the inside of his mouth brown and his tongue pink. Michelangelo's signature color is orange, so color his mask orange. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Michelangelo from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
