The written step-by-step video tutorial:
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Start by drawing a circle near the middle of the paper as a guide for Max's head. First make four small marks to determine the circle's height and width. Then connect the marks using curved lines. If you're struggling to draw the circle, just trace the outer rim of a small, circular object like a coin or a bottle cap.
Step 2: Draw a curved, horizontal line across the head as a guide to help you place the facial features of this character from Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas later on. On the top, left side, draw a short, curved, vertical line for another guide.
Step 3: On the top, left side of Max's head, draw a short, angled line as a guide for the first ear. On the top, right side of the head, draw another angled line as a guide for the other ear. This line should angle twice: once near the middle and again at the tip. Under the head, draw a line that's similar in shape to a curved letter V as a guide for the lower jaw.
Step 4: On the lower, right side of the head, draw a small circle as a guide for the front part of the body. Pay attention to the size of this circle compared to the head. To the right, draw a circle for the back of the body. Draw this circle bigger than the front body circle. Don't draw the body circles too close together.
Step 5: Draw two short lines to connect the head to the body and create the guide for the neck of this Dr. Seuss character. Use two longer lines to connect the middle circles together and finish the guide for Max's body.
Step 6: Under each body circle, draw a long, angled line as guides for Max's legs. Pay attention to the lengths of the lines. The lines should be almost as wide as they are tall.
Step 7: On the top, right side of the body, draw a short vertical line as a guide for Max's tail. On the right side of the ear on the right, draw a very long line that curves up as a guide for the back of the antler. On top of the head, slightly off to the left, draw a shorter, sloping line as a guide for the front of the antler.
That's it for the guides! For the next steps, use darker lines for a more defined drawing of Max the dog from Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas.
Step 8: Inside the head, near the left side, draw two ovals for Max's eyes. Draw the eyes on top of the horizontal guide line and on either side of the vertical guide line. Sketch the eyes lightly at first so that it's easy to erase if you make a mistake. Make the eyes a bit pointy at the top. When you get the shapes right, darken the lines. Make the eye on the right a bit bigger than the eye on the left because of the way Max's head is turned.
Step 9: On top of each eye, draw two short, curved lines for eyelashes. Inside each eye, near the right sides, draw a tiny oval for the pupils and shade them in. Don't shade in the pupils if you're going to color your drawing later because the pupils will be brown. Above the eyes, draw two short, curved lines for Max's eyebrows.
Step 10: Starting between the eyes, at the bottom, draw a series of curved lines toward the left for the muzzle of this character from Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas. These short, curved lines should overlap each other, and they should extend outside of the original head circle. Pay attention to how far left the top of the muzzle extends. At the end, draw a small, oval-like shape for Max's nose.
Step 11: Below the previous lines, draw a curved line for the bottom edge of the top jaw. Follow the edge of the initial circle and then curve the line up toward the eye to create a smile. At the top, draw a curved, horizontal line for a smile line. On the left, draw a couple more short, curved lines for the other side of Max's smile.
Step 12: Under the smile line, draw a sloping line for the first side of the open mouth. At the bottom, add the tongue by drawing a small, U-shaped line with a couple of curved lines above it. To the left of the tongue, draw another sloping line for the other side of the open mouth. Darken the initial guide that was under the circle to create the rest of Max's lower jaw.
Step 13: Darken the angled line on the left side of the head for the first part of the ear. Add a curved line above and a shorter curved line below to make the shape of the ear thicker. Darken the angled line on the right side of the head for the first part of Max's other ear. Draw an angled line below to make the shape of the ear thicker. To the right, draw a small, square-like shape for rest of the folded ear.
Step 14: On the right side of the face, draw a curved line that wraps around the smile line for Max's cheek. The line should stick out of the circle. Draw a similar but smaller line on the left side for the other cheek. Use the top half of the initial circle as a guide to draw the rest of the head. Follow the basic path of the initial circle but make the shape of the head a bit smaller.
Step 15: Darken the initial sloping line on top of the head for the first part of the reindeer antler the Grinch puts on Max's head. At the end of the line, draw a small, oval-like shape for the sawed-off tip of the antler. Add another sloping line on top to make the front part of the antler thicker. Draw a long, curved line over the head for the middle part of the antler. This line should be parallel to the other initial guide line. Curve the line up to create a branch on the reindeer antler. At the end of this short line, draw a small oval for the sawed-off tip. Make the branch thicker.
Step 16: Darken the initial line on the top, right side of the head for more of Max's reindeer antler. At the top, add a couple of short lines that angle to the right for another branch. Add an oval at the tip. Darken the tip of the guide and add a curved line on the left side to make the antler thicker. Draw a couple of short lines on the top, right side of Max's head for the string that holds the antler. On top of the antler, draw a couple of angular shapes and a short, wavy line for the knot on the string.
Step 17: Use the angled line on the lower, left side of the body as a guide to draw Max's front leg. Follow the path of the guide and lightly sketch the shape of the leg around it. Curve the shape for the joints. Make the foot long. Darken the lines when you get the shape right. Add small lines on the foot's tip for the toes.
Step 18: Use the angled line on the right as a guide to draw the hind leg the same way. Draw the shape of the leg around the guide. Make the foot long and add a couple of curved lines at the tip for Max's toes.
Step 19: Use the front leg as a template to draw the visible part of Max's other front leg. Only the front part is visible. Do the same thing with the other hind leg to the right.
Step 20: Use the remaining lines and shapes as guides to draw the rest of this How the Grinch Stole Christmas character's body. Simply darken the outer edges of the initial guides to create the shape of the body. Bend the lines for the body a bit more. Don't overlap the legs that are on this side of the body. Draw a series of short, angled lines around the guide on the top, right side of the body for Max's furry tail.
Step 21: Go over the final sketch lines with a pen, marker or any other type of permanent ink. Take your time and be careful when you ink your drawing to avoid any accidents. After the ink dries, get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser for a cleaner drawing.
Final Step: Color your drawing of Max the dog from Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas using colored pencils, markers or crayons! Use yellow for the antler. Color the ears and the pupils dark brown. Use light brown or yellow-orange for the rest of Max's body. Color the inside of the mouth dark red and the tongue pink. Don't forget to pause the video to draw at your own pace.
