How to Draw Knuckles
Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Knuckles the Echidna from Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog. A new drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!
Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.
Step 1: Start by drawing a circle near the right side of the page. It doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s just a guide for Knuckles' head.
Step 2: Next, draw two intersecting lines across the circle, one vertical and one horizontal. The vertical line should be close to the right side, and the horizontal line should be closer to the bottom. Give these lines a slight bend to contour to the shape of the circle.
Step 3: To draw a guide for Knuckles' eyes, draw an angled line sitting on top of the horizontal construction line. The line starts on the left side of the circle and goes up, then it dips down to where the construction lines intersect and ends on the right edge of the circle.
Step 4: Outside of the circle and below the horizontal construction line, draw a small upside-down triangle as a guide for Knuckles' nose.
Step 5: On the lower left side of a circle, draw a shape similar to a backward letter D as a guide for Knuckles' mouth.
Step 6: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic Knuckles shape, so now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.
Step 7: Darken the shape of Knuckles' nose, and make the sides bulge more and make the corners rounder. Shade the inside of Knuckles' nose except for a small circle at the top to represent glare.
Step 8: Use the lower part of the circle and the horizontal construction line as guides to draw Knuckles' muzzle. The top part of his muzzle is made up of three lines under his eyes, and the bottom part is one long curved line.
Step 9: Draw Knuckles' eyes by using the initial shapes as guides. Make the sides of his eyes bulge out more. Draw a curved line in between Knuckles' eyes along with a line above each eye to represent a furrowed brow.
Step 10: Inside each eye, draw a long oval for Knuckles' irises. Inside each iris, draw a smaller oval and shade it in for his pupil. On the side of each pupil, draw an even smaller oval for glare.
Step 11: Use the D shape as a guide to draw Knuckles' smirk. Make the top part longer and angled. Draw a zigzag line inside for his teeth.
Step 12: Knuckles' dreadlocks are a bit tricky to draw, so they are divided into two steps. First draw a long, curved V-shaped line on the left side of Knuckles' face, right next to his eye, for the first dreadlock. Then draw a line the starts above the right eye, extends over his head and dips down to a point on the far left side of the paper.
Step 13: Draw the rest of Knuckles' dreadlocks by drawing series of three long, curved lines, which sort of resemble the letter V, between the first two shapes.
Step 14: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Knuckles. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.
Step 15: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Knuckles! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Knuckles drawing.
Final Step: For a completely finished Knuckles drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! Color Knuckles' head red and his eyes blue. His muzzle is a peach color. If you don’t have peach, improvise and use orange or light brown. Experiment! That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Knuckles the Echidna from the Sonic the Hedgehog video games and cartoons.
