Draw Master Chief

Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw Master Chief from the Halo video games. A new drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!

Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

How to Draw Master Chief Step 1

Step 1: Start by drawing a big circle in the middle of the page. The circle doesn’t have to be perfect. It’s only a guide for Master Chief’s helmet.

Step 2: Now draw three intersecting lines across the circle, one vertical and two horizontal. The vertical line should be closer to the right side. The horizontal lines should divide the circle into three parts of descending sizes. The top part should be the biggest, the middle part should be a bit smaller, and the bottom part should be slightly smaller still. Don't worry about the measurements being exact. Just roughly estimate them. Give all the lines a slight bend to contour to the circle.

Step 3: That’s it for the initial sketch! You have the basic Master Chief helmet shape. Now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.

Step 4: Tighten the section on the upper left side of Master Chief's helmet shape by using the shape created by the construction lines and original circle as a guide. Follow the path of that shape when drawing and give it more angular corners as you darken it.

Step 5: Draw a few shapes and lines inside the section for extra detail. Draw a few square-like shapes at the top and a couple of circles at the bottom to represent the bolts in Master Chief's helmet. Draw some more lines to create more edges along this section.

Step 6: Draw the middle part of Master Chief's helmet using the construction lines and the right side of the original circle as a guide. First create the outer shape by giving it more angles. Then draw the small horizontal lines within the shape for detail. Draw a small rectangle at the bottom.

Step 7: Finish the top part of Master Chief's helmet by drawing the right section. Use the upper right side of the original circle as a guide when you darken the shape. Notice that the lower portion sticks out a bit to form the visor on the helmet.

Step 8: Draw Master Chief's face shield sitting right below the shapes you just created. The bottom part of the shield has a few angles and corners. Use the middle segment created by the construction lines as a guide when drawing the shield.

Step 9: Draw the line that goes across Master Chief's face shield. It's kind of a U-shaped arc that has a few angles and corners.

Step 10: Now draw the left side of Master Chief's helmet using the original circle and construction lines as guides. Draw these shapes using straight lines to give the helmet a sturdy feel. Use the image above for further reference.

Step 11: Draw the extra detail inside the shapes you just created. The detail is comprised of a lot of lines and a few small circles. When it comes to the extra detail on Master Chief's helmet, you can add as much or as little as you want. Just make sure you have the main outer shapes. All the little extra lines inside are extra.

Step 12: Use the lower left shape created by the construction lines and original circle as a guide to draw the lower left section of Master Chief's helmet. This shape can be tough to draw, so be patient and sketch it out lightly at first. Darken it once you have the correct structure.

Step 13: Draw the detail inside this section. Draw a few small lines on the right side and a curved buckle-like shape on the left side.

How to Draw Master Chief Step 14

Step 14: Draw the lowest portion of Master Chief's helmet right below the shapes you just created. Remember to use the initial shapes as guides. Notice the space left between this shape and the outer edge of the original circle.

How to Draw Master Chief Step 15

Step 15: Draw the mouthpiece of the helmet to the right of the shapes you just created and below Master Chief's face shield. The main shape resembles a square. Draw a few shapes above it that go up to the lower part of the shield.

Step 16: Draw the extra detail inside and around Master Chief's mouthpiece. It's basically a few straight lines and tiny circles. Draw only as much detail as you want.

Step 17: Finish up drawing Master Chief's helmet by drawing the lower right section of it. Use the outer edge of the original circle as a guide. Sketch out the main shape lightly at first and darken it once you have the structure right. Then draw the detail inside.

Step 18: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of Master Chief's helmet. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.

Step 19: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of Master Chief's helmet! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Master Chief drawing.

Final Step: For a completely finished Master Chief drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! The main part of the helmet's color varies depending on which version of Halo you want to use. It can be green or grayish dark green. You can first add a light layer of gray, then add dark green. The bits of detail throughout the helmet are gray and black. Master Chief' face shield is yellow-orange. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of Master Chief's helmet from the Halo video games.
