How to Draw the Ice King

Use the video and step-by-step drawing instructions below to learn how to draw the Ice King from Cartoon Network's Adventure Time. A new cartoon drawing tutorial is uploaded every week, so stay tooned!

Intro: Start off with a pencil sketch. In the beginning stages, don’t press down too hard. Use light, smooth strokes for sketching.

Draw Ice King Step 1

Step 1: Start by drawing a small circle near the top of the page. It doesn’t have to be perfect; it’s just a guide for the Ice King’s head.

Draw Ice King Step 2

Step 2: Inside the circle, draw two intersecting lines, one vertical and one horizontal. Have them bend a bit to contour to the circle’s form. These will be construction guides that will help you place the Ice King's features later on.

Draw Ice King Step 3

Step 3: Sitting on top of the horizontal construction line, draw two small circles for the Ice King's eyes. Place them on either side of the vertical horizontal line.

Draw Ice King Step 4

Step 4: Draw a guide for the Ice King's crown on top of his head. There should be three long narrow spikes on the crown similar to three upside-down letter V’s.

Draw Ice King Step 5

Step 5: Below the Ice King's head, draw a big arc as a guide for his beard. Start drawing the arc on the left side of his head at the end of the horizontal construction line. End the line on the other side of his head at the other end of the horizontal construction line.

Draw Ice King Step 6

Step 6: Draw the Ice King's body as a line that starts on the left side of the horizontal construction line, goes below his beard and then comes back up again to meet the right side of his beard.

Draw Ice King Step 7

Step 7: On either side of the Ice King's body, draw two small arcs as guides for his arms.

Draw Ice King Step 8

Step 8: That's it for the initial sketch! You have the basic Ice King shape, so now go in and tighten your drawing. From this point on, press harder with your pencil in order to get darker lines and a more defined sketch.

Draw Ice King Step 9

Step 9: Darken the shape of the Ice King's eyes. On top of each eye, draw two small rectangles with jagged sides for his eyebrows.

Draw Ice King Step 10

Step 10: Draw the Ice King's pointy nose right below the horizontal construction line. It should be long and pointy. Make sure to extend it outside of the circle a bit.

Draw Ice King Step 11

Step 11: Behind the Ice King's nose, draw a long line for his mouth. Draw a couple of arcs on either end for extra detail. Make sure the mouth extends the whole width of the original circle.

Draw Ice King Step 12

Step 12: Darken the shape of the Ice King's crown. Inside the crown, draw three jewels. The middle one should be the biggest. For the middle jewel, draw a long hexagon within a hexagon and connect the corners. Do the same for the other jewels but use diamond shapes instead.

Draw Ice King Step 13

Step 13: The Ice King's big beard is a bit tricky, so it’s split up into two parts. First draw the top part as a couple of lines that come down from his crown toward the horizontal construction line. Then draw the shape inward toward the Ice King's nose with a zigzag line.

Draw Ice King Step 14

Step 14: Now the draw the bottom part of the Ice King's flying beard using the initial arc as a guide. Make it wavier and draw a few jagged edges for detail. On the left side, draw an extra line that goes over his body for his hair.

Draw Ice King Step 15

Step 15: Use the initial line as a guide to draw the left arm. Simply thicken up the guide line and give him a sleeve. At the end of the sleeve, draw the Ice King's hand and fingers using a series of curved lines.

Draw Ice King Step 16

Step 16: Darken the initial guide line to complete drawing the rest of the Ice King's body.

Draw Ice King Step 17

Step 17: Draw the right arm the same way you drew the left. Thicken the guide line, and then draw the hand and fingers. The Ice King's beard is blocking part of his hand, so only draw the visible portion.

Draw Ice King Step 18

Step 18: That’s it! You now have a nice sketch of the Ice King from Cartoon Network's Adventure Time. You can stop at this quick drawing for a rough, sketchy look or go for a more finished look by continuing to the step below.

Draw Ice King Step 19

Step 19: For a more finished, inked look, carefully draw over the final sketch lines with a pen or marker. Wait for the ink to dry, and then get rid of every pencil mark with an eraser. You now have a finished inked drawing of the Ice King! You can stop here or go to the final step to complete your Ice King drawing.

Draw Ice King Step Last

Final Step: For a completely finished Ice King drawing, you have to color it. You can use markers, color pencils or even crayons! His crown is yellow, and the jewels are red. His skin is light blue, and his robe is a darker blue. That’s it! You now have a completed drawing of the Finn and Jake’s enemy: the evil Ice King from Cartoon Network's Adventure Time.
